LEADERSHIP ST. PETE PROJECT UPDATE

2/29/2016

ALPHA House, the beneficiary organization selected by the 2016 Class of Leadership St. Pete, was featured this week on Fox News. Lexi Plummer, a class member from HSN, as well as Jennifer Stracick, Alpha House's Executive Director, explained the need for support - as Pinellas County’s only residential maternity program, ALPHA House provides housing and supportive services to homeless pregnant women and teens, new mothers with infants, and families experiencing crisis pregnancies. Since 1979, ALPHA House has served more than 3,000 women, teens and infants and almost 90 percent of those who have gone through their program have made a successful transition into permanent housing and independent living. This means that they are making impacts on their residents not only today, but for future generations.

The 2016 Leadership St. Pete class has introduced a new way to secure financial assistance for the ALPHA House project. Check out the video of the Fox News segment and donate now: YouCaring.com/ALPHA.

The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce® celebrated the success of 2015, recognized community leaders and looked forward into 2016 with over 1,100 members on Thursday, January 28th at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. The Chamber celebrated the outgoing 2015 Board of Governors Chair, William Ulbricht, President of St. Anthony’s Hospital and welcomed new 2016 Chair, W. The shine is definitely on St. Pete Chamber members, with last year’s tradition of all members receiving 2 free tickets continuing.

Councils, committees and task forces are the backbone of the efforts in moving toward the Chamber’s Strategic Plan goals. The audience was asked which efforts they wanted to learn more about, and the St. Pete Young Professionals and Leadership St. Pete® (LSP) program won with an outstanding number of votes.

After hearing from Kathleen Larrison, LSP Chair 2015 on the Class of 2015's phenomenal success in 2015 with raising $90,000 for the Class Project, the Suncoast Center, Leah Bickley, the 2016 Class Chair, spoke on behalf of the class on their excitement to make a difference in the community by moving forward with the 2016 Class Project, Alpha House. A previous SPYP Chair, he discussed 2016 plans including the Grow Smarter Strategy for Economic Development, the first annual Benchmarking Trip to "Think Outside the 'Burg", Small Business Week and more.

Holden introduced Kathy Gillette, Market President & CEO of Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, who introduced the 2016 Chamber Member of the Year. This year's winner, Ryan Tarrant, holds three separate Chamber memberships with three different businesses (Courtyard by Marriott St. Petersburg, Cinema Squatch and Pinellas County Gator Club) and was the Chair of the “most outrageous” Good 'Burger Awards in September of 2015. Awarding the honor to a deserving member was a great way to end the program, and attendees were invited to enjoy food and drinks in the atrium of the Mahaffey Theater.

Picture
We've joined promotional forces with Kobie Marketing to gain added exposure to a fundraising event mixing up talent, food drives and fun to benefit local charities. Jannus Live will host St. Pete’s Got Talent on November 12, 2015.

The St. Petersburg Free Clinic Food Bank feeds over 40,000 community members, and the need for donations is constant. Last year, Kobie Marketing raised over 46,000 pounds of food through office participation and #StompOutStarving, a local fundraiser, which helped to keep the Food Bank’s coffers full for over 6 months.

Kobie is calling on the community and local companies to join forces as they try to expand their efforts and include other local charities of the community’s choice to benefit from the event as well. There are several ways to get involved, including hosting food collection bins.

The St. Pete Chamber is currently housing two collection bins and invites members and locals to stop in to donate non-perishable food items.
