The first Goodwill was started by a Methodist minister in Boston in 1902 to assist his poor parishioners. He gathered items donated by wealthy people and employed members of his parish in repairing and selling the donated items. This offered people in need a hand up, not a handout. Goodwill-Suncoast is one of 162 autonomous Goodwill organizations across the globe. Our mission is helping people achieve their full potential through the power of work.
As a 501© (3) nonprofit, they sell donated goods to create job opportunities and training in the communities they serve. 87.6% of Goodwill-Suncoast's operating budget is devoted to programs and services. Goodwill-Suncoast has 1,006 employees throughout the 10 counties they serve. Their headquarters is located in St. Petersburg. Goodwill's services to the local community include training and job placement for people with disabilities, free employment services for anyone who would like career assistance, a children’s literacy program, affordable apartment communities for seniors and people with disabilities, and community corrections programs.
Goodwill-Suncoast just opened its 19th retail location - a superstore at 2550 34th Street N. in St. Petersburg. Stop in to check out this new location, and help support Goodwill's BookWorks program by donating children's books.
