Our local St. Pete-Clearwater Airport has been in business for over 61 years. In 1941, it was an Army Airfield, built for WWII as an Army Flight Training Base for a combat training unit flying P-40’s and P-51’s. The original terminal building was dedicated to them in 1957 and the following year the airport was renamed St.Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport to capitalize on recognition as a tourism destination.
St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) reported a 12% increase in 2017 over 2016, setting a new record with 2,055,269 passengers. PIE is Allegiant Airlines third largest airport operation, sitting behind Orlando, Sanford and Las Vegas. Allegiant first started serving St. Pete-Clearwater in November 2006, when it launched 12 routes. They currently fly non-stop to 54 cities from the St. Pete-Clearwater airport and recently added service to Nashville, TN on June 14th.
