Coffee Chat with Council Member Karl Nurse

Posted On 08/16/2016 by St. Pete Chamber

Chamber members gathered at RBC Wealth Management Tuesday morning to discuss St. Pete’s successes and challenges with Council Member Karl Nurse. Nurse, the City Council’s District 6 representative since 2008, is a small business owner with experience in real estate development.

He opened the meeting by speaking thoughtfully on a range of issues, from affordable housing to water infrastructure. Given that his district is both demographically and socioeconomically diverse, he paid special attention to the development of Midtown and the issues involved in planning St. Petersburg’s explosive growth responsibly. Nurse discussed Community Redevelopment areas and vocational training among other tools to tackle what he described as the four elements to defeating poverty: jobs, safety, education, and housing. In addition, he was optimistic on the Rays situation, saying that he thought the city was in a good position to keep the team while noting that their departure would not be catastrophic by any means.

Attendees had the opportunity for a conversation that allowed Nurse to expand on the subjects he raised while addressing members’ concerns and receiving their input.

He closed by praising St. Petersburg’s planning, regarding such elements as roads and urban development rules that mandate street-level pedestrian-focused retail downtown. Nurse would rather be in St. Petersburg than any city in Florida, and the Chamber agrees!

The next Coffee Chat will take place on September 9th at 8:00am at John’s Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center, and will feature State Senator Jeff Brandes.
