With a rich and lengthy history of success in entrepreneurial operations, including Iafrate Construction and Angelo’s Recycled Materials, Iafrate brothers Dominic Jr. and Steve decided it was time to expand their portfolio into something for which they had a lifelong passion: the craft spirits industry. In 2014, the family owned and operated St. Petersburg Distillery opened its doors for production as the largest craft distillery in the state of Florida. The artisan distillery produces meticulously crafted, award-winning varieties of rum, whiskey, vodka and gin, marketed under their popular Old St. Pete, Banyan Reserve, and Oak & Palm brands. They also produce Tippler’s Orange Liqueur crafted using native Florida oranges, peels and all.
St. Petersburg Distillery’s pot distilled spirits are handmade, batch by batch, in small quantities to ensure the highest quality. Their historic, handcrafted copper pot stills were produced in the early 1930s by EB Badger and Sons Co. in Boston, Massachusetts. St. Petersburg Distillery uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, taking pride in supporting local agriculture to enhance their distinct flavors and production process. Old St. Pete Sweet Corn Whiskey uses sweet corn from Okeechobee; Old St. Pete Sunset Gin uses lemons, oranges and grapefruits sourced from Pasco, Polk, and Indian River counties and the Treasure Coast; Old St. Pete Righteous Rum uses refined grade molasses from Okeechobee sugar cane; and Tipplers’s Orange Liqueur uses oranges from Polk and Pasco counties.
These products, plus some select small batch specialties, can be found at their new market store and tasting room. The all-new experience allows guests to pull up a stool and try a selection of St. Petersburg Distillery’s spirits in the smartly designed space. Select products can also be found at ABC, Total Wine, Publix, Winn Dixie and many great independently owned liquor stores in the area. The unique spirits can also be found mixed within some of the finest craft cocktails at some of the country’s most popular lounges. The tasting room and market store is the first phase of an elevated distillery experience that will eventually include public tours and sophisticated event space options.
Last March, St. Petersburg Distillery showed their community “spirit” as they shifted production to hand sanitizers in response to the shortage of the product in the area, and later partnered with Feeding Tampa Bay to donate the hand sanitizers to those in need. To date, the distillery has donated more than 100,000 units of sanitizer to the community, including local law enforcement agencies, city offices and first responders. In addition to the complimentary bottles for the public, St. Petersburg Distillery sold (and is still selling) various sizes of hand sanitizer to meet the larger needs of pharmacies, nursing homes, hospitals, and medical offices.
St. Petersburg Distillery’s new market store and tasting room is located at 800 31st Street S., St. Petersburg, FL 33712.
