9 Tips for a Great LSP Application
The first step in becoming a member of the LSP Class of 2027 is submitting a great application that moves you on to the interview round.
Here are 9 tips to ensure you submit a great application:
1. Answer the questions!
While it seems obvious, this trips up many applicants. Several of the application essays consist of multiple questions. You need to answer ALL of the questions posed for each essay. Also, you are allotted a certain number of words per answer - use them. Longer, detailed answers will generally raise your score.
2. Be authentically you
There are no right or wrong answers on the application. We want to know more about you. Answer the questions authentically and show us who you really are. We’re looking for a diverse class of interesting people; this is your opportunity to showcase what will make you a great addition to the Class of 2027.
3. It’s anonymous
It’s important to note that applications are anonymously presented to the review committee. any information identifying you is edited out before the applications are reviewed, so it’s best not to include any identifying information in the essays (job title, company, etc.). It’s ok to talk about your profession, but don’t include identifying details or your employer’s name in the answers.
4. No AI answers
Just. Don’t. Do. It. We are not expecting you to write like Hemingway or Tolstoy. But if you write like Claude or ChatGPT your score will be negatively impacted. We are looking to gain insights into who you are and what makes you unique. AI does not let us see that. Again - Just. Don’t. Do. It.
5. Draft answers in a document - can’t save the application
Unfortunately, our application app doesn’t allow you to save your answers partway through. Write your answers in Word or Docs, proofread your answers there, and when you are satisfied with your answers, copy and paste them into the application.
6. Spend time - don’t crank it out all at once
Planning Committee (PC) members have typically read hundreds of applications over the years. Low-effort applications are obvious and are scored accordingly. Schedule enough time to provide detailed, thoughtful answers, and let them sit overnight before you review and proofread them.
7. Proofread
Take the time to proofread your answers. Typos, punctuation mistakes, missing words, etc. can create a poor perception of your application's quality. Put your best foot forward and proofread your application.
8. Have someone you know and trust and who knows you review your application
Have a trusted friend, advisor, or mentor (or all three!) review and proofread your application. They may catch things you missed and help you strengthen your application.
9. Work with an LSP mentor
PC members have volunteered to help candidates with their applications. While we’re not going to write the essays for you, we can help you organize your thoughts, develop a structure for your writing, and make suggestions to strengthen your answers.
